Unlike an icon or a button designed to go on your website, a logo is intended to be used on everything a company owns and produces for the next decade or so. It represents the company. Don’t get me wrong, the hours involved may seem long and tedious but a logo to me is by far one of the most enjoyable kind of projects to work on. Most designers go through their own variation of what I believe is basically the same process. It begins with research. Research is crucial — among other things it should involve learning about the company, finding out who their audience is, what the industry is like and what type of imagery might be appropriate for inspiration. Following the research I like to just let my brain spill — I do dozens of really bad pencil sketches, generating as many unique ideas as I can. When I feel that I’ve explored as many possibilities as I can bear I then LOGO DESIGNselect several of my sketches and I turn to the computer to rebuild and refine them. From those I then chose 2 or 3 that I like enough to spruce up and present to the client. These first concepts are designed in black and white only. I feel that this is important, it’s a kind of “lowest common denominator” insurance. Somewhere down the road nearly every company is forced to use a black and white version of their logo for something. If the design is first good in black and white then it can only get better with color (well that’s the theory anyhow). After this first presentation the client has to chose which of the 2-3 logos is working or showing promise for them. 2-3 rounds of refinement (add color) and edits follow.

Never limit your design options. Swooshes or any other visual devise should be explored and embraced — but only if and when they are used in a unique and meaningful way.

Designers need to step up and help clients better understand what good design is. Often working with a client means teaching them about craft, making it clear that your design decisions are based on knowledge and boldly expressing your opinion. Design is not magic. It is largely a demonstrable process that takes most designers many years to develop .

What Is Stock Photography?


Stock Photography is simply photos taken “on spec”. This means the photographer takes pictures of various objects, people, or situations, and sells them after the pictures have been taken. They are not on a specific photography assignment, instead they are taking photos of subjects they’d like to take pictures of.

Stock photography is primarily used in printed advertisements, brochures, magazines, and websites, though there are many other ways stock photography can be used.

Stock photography is licensed in several different ways. The two most popular are Rights Managed Stock Photography, and Royalty Free Stock Photography.

Rights Managed photography is the use of stock photos that are licensed for a specific, limited time and purpose. If an advertiser for instance, needed a stock photo for one specific ad campaign, they could license a photo for that specific use. And they’d be limited to using the photo only for that campaign. They’d also be charged based on the size of the ad campaign they intended to use the stock photo for.

If they wanted to use the same photo again, they’d have to pay another fee. And that fee might be different, if the campaign use and sizes are different. These recurring fees are called royalties, and with rights managed stock photography they can be quite hefty. Ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars for the limited use of one photograph.

Royalty free stock photography allows you to pay a license fee once, then use the photo multiple times. There are usually limitations on this form of stock photography, however the restrictions are not nearly as narrow as rights managed photography is. A designer or advertiser could license one photo for instance, and use it in hundreds of different ad campaigns, without incurring additional fees. In other words: No royalty fees need to be paid.

Generally royalty free stock photography can be licensed for as little as $50 up to several hundred dollars depending on the licensing source and rights given.

One of the most popular forms of Stock Photography for small and web based businesses, is royalty free micro stock photography. This is a variation on the royalty free model, but it’s referred to as “micro stock” because designers and advertisers pay just a dollar or two per image license.

This type of Stock Photography has become quite popular with website owners particularly, because it’s a very inexpensive way to get top quality photos for use on their websites. Quality stock photos can be licensed for as little as $1 in smaller, web friendly sizes. And prices go up to about $3 or $5 for larger, print quality photo sizes.

Since these photos are royalty free, designers can use them multiple times for that one time low cost. Be sure to check the licensing restrictions though. Royalty free does not automatically mean “public domain” or “copyright free”, and each micro stock photography site has their own particular use restrictions on the photos you license.

Free Web Templates Are Special Effects Or Flash Necessary?

You see a lot of new Free Web Templates that have all sorts of special effects like noise, moving images, and morphing graphics. The gee whiz or cool factor is used to sell the Free Web Templates and entice the buyer. But what impact, if any, does this kind of special effect have on the value of the user experience?

I know that I’m not very attracted to noisy web sites. If fact if your target user is working in an office environment or other quiet working area, noise is the last thing they need. One of the most common practice jokes I’ve seen is to lure an unsuspecting user to a site that screams or plays some dramatic music as soon as you enter the web site. It is funny but it’s not nice.

Special effects have 3 possible drawbacks. First and foremost is load time. When you add several large files (as all flash or .fta files are) you are making the user wait. That is never a good thing in today’s I want it now mindset. The second slow down can occur based on the user’s screen settings and resolution. And the third is that the user may not have the necessary version of flash so they will be asked to download the latest version.

First impressions do count and if you start off by making the user update and wait for some gee whiz visual that doesn’t add any value, it’s probably not a good thing. Especially if you are doing some type of direct marketing. The emotional state of the potential buyer is important and irritating a user right off the bat doesn’t bode well for generating sales.

It’s a well-known fact that you only have a few seconds to grab the visitor’s attention. If you use up those precious seconds loading some flash routine that’s not a very good use of time. A strong headline or even an illustration would be a better choice.

The one benefit of using templates is that you can change the layout to better fit your subject matter or target audience. The designer of the template (like many chefs I’ve met about being horrified when you pick up a condiment to put on their perfect dish) don’t want you messing with their design. Whenever I use a template I almost always customize the design.

Free Web Templates
There are two reasons I change something on almost any template. The first is to make sure people don’t see multiple copies of the same design. The other is that rarely will a template fit my concept exactly. Some type of tweaking or changing is necessary to achieve my goal.

Many times I just use the Free Web Templates as a guide on color and layout. Maybe use a graphic or illustration that fits my subject matter. There are no rules, the important issues are to communicate, sell, or influence your visitor. So as long as you can accomplish the given tasks, that’s all that matters.

That’s not to say that you can’t use flash or other special effects. When the subject matter or message lends itself to audio or specific graphics flash can be very effective. I have audio on several of my web sites since it is a good method of communication. But the audio is controlled by the visitor, they can choose to listen or not, it’s their option.

Special effects cover a lot of grounds. If you need to visually demonstrate a process that is difficult to describe, an illustration is perfect. If you want to provide an example of music, or provide a video demo on some process, or the special effect helps create credibility (like testimonials for example).

I think the main thing to keep in mind is to use and not abuse any flash routines. Don’t over do it just for the sake of having some flashy (no pun intended) design that slows down the load time and doesn’t add any value. Use any special effects appropriately and keep them as fast loading as possible.

And when you go shopping for templates, don’t go for the singing dogs or flying fish. It’s like the dog food commercials trying to show how much their dog food looks like human food. The dog doesn’t care what it looks like, but the humans do and they are the ones buying the product.

And don’t be afraid to make changes to the templates to suit your particular need. If you like the colors and layout but not the illustrations or graphics, just remove the graphics and illustrations or put in ones you feel better serve the design.

I would also suggest some change is necessary on any template to give it your personal touch. You don’t want 50 other websites with the same design as yours anyway. Add some originality to the layout or add some new graphics that are unique to your web site.

Use A Free Web Template? Make It Original!


A lot webmasters go for the ease and speed of using a Free Web Templates of some type to get a fast start. And a web site design template, whether you buy it or make it can be a big time saver. But you also always want to make sure that you customize each one enough to stand out from the original.

Especially when you use a professional template bought through the Internet. There are a lot of good designs out there that can fit multiple subject areas. The color and design are well thought out and have a lot of visual appeal. Even if you use a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor like FrontPage, a custom web site template can speed development.

One of the toughest things in creating a web site is to get a good clean design that has good navigation and attractive color schemes. And you don’t want to make any changes that have a negative impact on the user experience. Always keep user navigation in mind.

One of the must haves in any good design is for the user to easily find the information they want fast. Whether it’s details on your product and service or even how to buy, make it as simple and easy as you can for the customer. Many times I tone down the design by removing some illustrations or graphics that aren’t necessary.

I’m not particularly sold on things that make noise (audio is meant to be used sparingly and totally at the users discretion). There’s nothing more irritating to someone in a quiet environment (like an office cubicle or library) when they visit your web site than loud music or weird noises.

Many times I may like one particular element of the Free Web Templates and just use that for my current project. For example, a menu design, color combination, or maybe a specific layout. Your content should be the focus, not your design. Most web sites are designed to inform, sell, or communicate with the user.

If you look at the major web sites like Yahoo, Amazon, and Google they all have a very clean and easy to navigate layout and design. No fancy graphics, noises, or special effects like Flash. Now if you are designing a web site for a Multi-Media company, then it might be appropriate but other wise stick to the basics.

You can also use templates to help you come up with new ideas that fit a special design requirement. Position and layout are key factors in keeping the user interested and can help with the flow of information. You normally have about 5 seconds or less to engage the visitor so it’s necessary to grab their attention fast.

So your web site content should be the first thing a user sees, not some twirling illustration. And if you are selling, the headline is the element that will keep the visitor reading, not your design. Graphics are great to illustrate a point, establish a brand, or provide a visual of your product. But if over used, they can destract from your message.

If you want to see how a typical visitor views your website, check out the Google Adsense Heat Map. It shows the natural travel of any visitors eyes and where they often look first, second, and third. The heat map was developed to help Adsense users but the same principal applies to all information displayed. If you keep that in mind while designing the layout, you can increase the visibility of important elements of your message.

It’s also a good idea to change all the names of any graphics used from a template. There are two reasons, one is it’s a good SEO (search engine optimization) tactic to keep names within subject matter and use alt text feature too, and plus this also keeps your website looking like a duplicate to the search engine bots that review all web sites.

A good set of templates can help both with design ideas and speed up the development process. And this can help you give a client a better product in less time. Always try and add some changes and don’t copy a Free Web Templates exactly. Make enough changes to keep it original and insure that the content is the focus point.
