Royalty Free Images, Rights Managed, Flat Rate

Stock PhotographyRemember too that, at some point, you decided to discontinue using/paying for the image the agency or photographer can then sell the image to someone else, even someone in your field.

Flat Rate Images – this term isn’t quite at common but it is similar to royalty free. Usually this means that you pay a one time fee for an image, but it can only be used for one purpose by one person. Pricing will be higher than royalty free but less than rights managed.

Copyrighted Images – even with royalty free you are still only purchasing the right to use an image not the image itself. All images are property of the agency or photographer who owns them. How do you know who owns them, there is usually a © symbol with date and name of the person or agency who owns the image. No matter what you paid for the image you are NOT the owner of the image. This means you cannot remove the copyright information, alter the photo, use it as part of a logo that you own a copyright, or resale the image as your own.

These terms will get you started but remember there can be differences in these definitions from agency to agency and photographer to Stock Photography. Every agency and photographer selling stock images should have a legal or license page to explain these terms and any others that they use, if they don’t you may want to move onto another site. Be aware, read all the information, and know what you are buying.

Definitions of Terms Used in The Stock Photography

photographyAre you confused by the terms used in the Stock Photography Business? You aren’t the only one. These terms are unique to the Stock Photos Biz and this article will help clarify the definitions of some of the terms they use, for example…royalty free images, rights managed images, flat rate images, copyrighted images, etc.

So you are a small business person or web designer and you want to purchase some stock photography for your website. Great. Stock Photography is a wonderful way to improve the emotional impact of your site. But there are a few terms unique to the stock photography business that you should know.

Royalty Free Images – you’ll see this term often. What it means is that you pay a one time fee for an image and you can use it for as many times as you want for as long as you wish. It is a great way to get inexpensive photos. Now if you are concerned that your competitor would or could use the same image as you, photographers and agencies can continue to sell the image after you purchase it, then Design Training:

Rights Managed Images – this one is next term you’ll see. This means that you pay a fee for the image based on how, where, how long, and how many people will see the image. This one will cost you a lot more in most cases. This is worth it if you do not want your competitor using the same image for the same purpose. Usually the Stock Photography agency or photographer also agree not to sell the image to others in your field for the time that you are using the image. So you can see why this option protects your use of the image but you’ll also pay much more for this protection.

What’s it Worth? Pricing your Stock Photos

Stock PhotographyOut of the blue a business contacts you wanting to use one of your pics. They have seen it at your web site, on your blog or at an exhibition and are requesting availability and price. After the warm glow wears off how do work out what it is worth? What can you ask for and still get the sale? But you don’t want to give it away, do you?

Firstly they are not buying a print. They are requesting the right to use your pic a multiple number of times in a way that will enhance their business and their sales. They will handle the printing side of things you are just providing the image. So the question really is what is it worth to them?

To determine this you need more information.

What is its intended use: Advertising or editorial?

Specific use: Newspaper & magazine ads, packaging, point of sale, brochures etc for Advertising (remember if it is for advertising you will need model releases for any recognizable people); Books, newspaper or magazine story illustration, news letters etc for Editorial.

Size and Placement: Full page, half page, quarter page or spot, front cover, back cover, inside.
Distribution: How many impressions and/or times will it be used. If in a newspaper or magazine what is the circulation? If it is packaging, how many bottles of wine will your image label?

Exclusivity: Can you sell the image to a competitor or does the company want exclusive use and if so for how long?
Once this information is in place you are in a position to calculate the value of your image to the company. There are several places on the net that can help, Stock Photography Price Calculator is one. Use of this calculator will get you a high, average and low price based on current market expectations which you can use for your negotiations.

When I contact the enquiring business for the above information I usually ask, in that initial email, what their intended spend is on the project. Mainly to get an idea of how professional they are. If they indicate the overall budget for the project, 20% to 25% will be for resources, just be aware that your image is part not all of the resources. If they don’t have a budget,  If the business is unknown to you or it is your first dealing with them, asking for your money up front is not out of the question. It can also be a face saving tactic when being pushed for a lower price that you feel is their top offer. If you are offering payment at a later date, it is essential that you include on your invoice “licensed rights are not assigned until the invoice is paid in full.” This will give you some sort of fall back position if the money never arrives.

Beware of the old chestnut of “we will be buying a lot more of this type of image in the future, can you do something about the price”. My response to this one is along the lines that I give discounts to regular buyers and a regular buyer is one with a history of 5 or more purchases. To the exposure I will get, just think of the dollars in the bank in the future, argument my response is I have to pay my bills now. I mean who really does the read the photo byline on a wine bottle label?

Don’t forget this is a business negotiation, the buyers job is to get the Design Training they can, your job, apart from making the pics, is to get the best price you can for your image.

Web Design In A Recession – How To Survive

Design TrainingWe are currently in what is possibly the worst economic crisis in history. Web design companies and web designers are almost certainly wondering if they are safe or not.

This all comes down to one question. Will companies spend money on web design? The answer is :

In the short run: they will spend less In the long run: they will spend moreMy reasoning is based on my years of experience as a business owner and on my interpretation of the existing marketplace. You can download free Stock Photography from this site.

People are uneasy at the moment. They listen to all the downbeat news and thus they are withdrawing from their expenditures and waiting to see what happens.

At this point you’re probably wondering what this has to do with web design. Well, for quite a few months of the recession, you will notice a slowing down in the web design business. Companies are worried, too.

So, what should you do as a web design company owner or a freelance web Design Training?

You sell cheap!

Instead of offering out of budget quote for web design jobs, offer more cost-effective web design packages.
You can easily do this by employing a blog as a base and then influence a pre-made web template that you would modify. With this type of package, you can offer customers the functionality found in a blog/CMS with an attractive website layout for just a fraction of the cost. It will take much less time for you to launch the website.
In the long run

I think that once the preliminary upset of the recession passes, companies will once again start to look at economical ways to obtaining new customers and to reduce the cost. The web is ideal for this so this is where they will turn.
Web Design Training companies and web designers will need to be able to offer some web marketing ability for the sites that are thinking of branding. The web design companies who are offering this will have a greater ability to attract new customers. Thus, understanding how Google Ad words can be used with a well established website is something interesting to look in. Also, you will need to have an improved grasp on dynamic web technologies like PHP and AJAX in order to attract new customers.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the present recession does not bring catastrophe for web Design Training companies but what it means however is that you will have to adapt to the current reality. For those who adapt, it can be a very advantageous time.

If you’re looking for a reliable web design company that will develop towards your business goals, while looking fantastic with a high search engine ranking – check out Designzillas!

Website Design Training Tips

Design TrainingFrom the very beginning when html tables were invented to display numerical and mathematical data, web designers were hacking and distorting the code to create something that would be pleasing on the eye. Tables were never meant to contain images and display layouts, but the ingenuity of web designers produced some beautiful looking designs from these most basic of building materials.

With the expert advice, the online companies are in a better position to salvage their reputation and business records. The experts would typically acquaint the business owners with the more common mistakes at the SEO end. An Internet marketing consultant Vancouver would advise its client against the incorporation of text and content in the form of graphic presentations. Some pdf rendering techniques could be outdated as well and not very much conducive to search engine optimization. The ultimate aim in all this is to ensure that the search engines are able to search, read, and then index the content.

Another, even more important element to look for is a website design company’s overriding philosophy regarding website design. What do I mean? Taking Stock of Your Photos

Design TrainingEver been looking at a company’s Web site (or printed brochure or product box) and wondered “How can that company afford these pricey models and professional photography?” Hey — we’ve been fooled too. Most likely, particularly with smaller companies, what you’re actually looking at is stock photography.

A stock photo is one that hasn’t been taken for a particular assignment or, after it’s been used for editorial or commercial purposes, has been offered for resale. While you’ll find stock photos for sale by individual photographers all over the Internet, the first place you’ll likely stop for your photos is a stock photography service of some sort.

Which type of service you use, however, depends on your needs and your budget. At the low end of the scale are subscription-based image collections–such services offer access to all of their Design Training for a membership or a regular fee. For instance, you might gain access to the site for one day, seven days, or a month, with the understanding that you have relatively unfettered usage rights (aside from reselling the photo) to the images you download in that period of time. Photos.com gives you such access for $99 a month, enabling you to download and use images in either 72 dpi (for Web and multimedia work) or 300 dpi files (good for printing). offers a one-year, $149 subscription for low-to-medium resolution images;  Ranges from $19.95 a month to $99 for the year. Clipart.com offers rates such as $7.95 a week for access to their photos (along with fonts, clipart and other items you might find handy for your site). The quality of the images may not be stellar or terribly original, but there’s a chance you’ll find a photo that’s OK for your needs.

Subscription-based Stock Photography services can be a great bargain if you stumble on the right image or you need lots of images for little money; but what if you’re simply not finding the perfect image for your site or materials? The next step up is to order royalty-free images a la carte. For that you’ll find plenty of options, from yourdesignneeds.com to You’ll find that prices vary greatly, ranging (generally) from $29 to hundreds of dollars per image. , Instance, offers Getty images at three different color-coded levels; if you want to limit yourself to images that cost about $29 for Web-based use, you can, or you can browse through images that cost hundreds for print use.

Stock Photography

With royalty-free images, you can use the image repeatedly, although there are sometimes restrictions regarding whether the image can be used both for editorial and advertising, Web vs. print production and so on. One great place to start is Fotosearch.com, where you can search for photos offered by over 50 different stock-photo and stock-illustration houses. Once you find the photo you need, you can purchase it directly on the site or you can click over directly to a site that looks promising and search there. Prices on Fotosearch.com reflect the pricing set by the photography house that owns the artwork.

So what’s beyond stock photography? At the high-end, you can buy specific publication rights to Stock Photgraphy photos that give you exclusive use of the photo in certain markets or arenas or for a particular length of time. Generally you’ll buy a “rights-managed” photo for a serious reason–you want to use it for a unique advertising or branding campaign or for a important editorial piece. For instance, Getty Images offers rights-managed photos from Time-Life, National Geographic and in many different categories. Other services include Comstock.com, Corbis.com and Veer.com.

How much? Prices are based on the purpose of the image license, the length of time you want to use it, the reason for using it, whether you want exclusive use of it in a certain part of the world–and many other factors that add up quickly. Let’s put it this way: You get what you pay for.
