Lemmings vs. Leaders

Design TutorialsWe all know that it’s tempting to copy the competition. There is safety in conformity a certain “comfort factor” in being similar. After all, the other company knows what its doing, right? Not always.

First, remember that branding is about DIFFERENTIATION emphasizing your company’s differences, not similarities. When you copy the competition, you’re reminding customers of them, not you. However, there’s a difference between exact imitation and creative inspiration. Use creativity to leverage an existing idea, but avoid replicating its every detail. So when is it okay to follow someone else’s lead and when isn’t it?

Of course, plagiarism is out, and it’s illegal to copy anything that’s patented or trademarked. Here are some other, less obvious things you may be tempted to copy but shouldn’t:

Don’t imitate the design/layout of sales materials. Copying a competitor’s materials is never a good idea because instead of differentiating you, it makes you look more like your competitor. It’s fine to imitate basics of their material like “lots of white space” or forced-perspective product Stock Photography (just don’t use the same perspective!). But avoid choosing similar colors, graphics and layout.

Don’t imitate the content or style of your competitor’s copywriting, or you’ll literally Free Sound just like the competition. Instead, create your own unique “voice” and messaging. Good copy has a consistent, strategic tone to it (e.g., conversational, direct, humorous, etc.) that reflects the personality of the company and product. When done correctly, copywriting is an integral part of branding.

Don’t imitate the primary color your competitor uses. Imitate a competitor’s marketing strategy or sales incentives only with extreme caution. Make sure you understand the underlying assumptions first. For example, if a competitor’s sales materials feature an upscale design, maybe there’s a good reason behind it, maybe not. Is there a market for premium-priced goods? Or does the CEO simply prefer an expensive look? Sometimes companies even bigger ones have no sound strategy behind what they do. They’re just catering to personal tastes or imitating somebody else themselves.

Imitation is not all bad, though. Here are instances in which it can be quite beneficial:

When you translate a principle from one industry to another. For example, a local carpet company offers a one-day “Remnant Sale.” Your computer company offers a similar one-day sale with out-of-date PCs.

When being different hurts your customers’ experience. It rarely makes sense to deviate from standard industry terms or navigation nomenclature. For example, changing the “About Us” link to “Leading the Way” on your website Design Tutorials may be creative, but it’s less clear and makes customers less comfortable. In some cases, familiarity is crucial.

When imitating something “obvious” brings comfort to your customers. Say you own a restaurant and your customers are health-conscious. Green is a color associated with health, but your competitors also know this and probably use green abundantly. You don’t need to omit green from your design palette instead, use it as a secondary color, or choose an unusual but attractive shade of green that no one else has chosen.

When being different means not meeting established customer expectations. Industry standards are standard for a reason. It’s risky to deviate from the norm when it means customers may be disappointed.

Desing TutorialsHow did you get involved in type Design Tutorials?

I went to RISD in their undergraduate program. I finished in 1992. It became difficult there for me, because I wanted to learn to design type, which was hardly the focus at RISD. We were taught to use type, how to think with type, but not how to design type. There’s no place really in this country where you can do that. Inge Druckery and Matthew Carter’s course at Yale is good, but it’s for grad students only, and it’s just one course.

When I was 16, there was a competition sponsored by the Type Shop in New York. It was open to 6- to 17-year olds. The assignment was to draw a typeface Free Fonts. I was aware that type existed, but I had never tried it myself. I went with the first idea in my head, and I won in the best-of-age category. I did it all with a radiograph and a drawing board. The competition was in 1986. After that I had a couple of other ideas that I chased down through high school—I designed 8 or 9 “fonts” while I was in high school. One of them survived. It’s Armada, distributed by Font Bureau.

I was thrown out of French class for a day because I was in the back of the room drawing a lowercase k. It was then that I knew I should go to Design Training school.

Print vs. Web: What To Know About File Formats (EPS vs. JPG vs. GIF)

If you’ve ever had anything professionally printed, you’ve probably been asked for an “EPS” of your logo. Ever wonder why you can’t just use a JPG, like on your website? What is the difference between an EPS (Encapsulated PostScript), JPG or JPEG (Stock Photography Experts Group) and GIF (Graphics Interchange Format)? Design Tutorials

In brief, an EPS is the standard file format used for printing (e.g., business cards, brochures, signage, etc.), while JPG and GIF files are the most common file formats used on the Internet. Here’s why:

An EPS file contains vector information, which means its resolution is not determined by pixels. As a result, an EPS can be made as large or small as necessary without compromising print quality or losing design detail. There’s a good chance an EPS file will display poorly on your computer screen, but this does not mean it will print badly. Regardless of how it looks on your screen, it is the file you need to produce professional-grade printed materials. It is NOT recommended for use on your website Design Tutorials.

A JPG is a compressed image file suitable for use on the Internet (e.g., your website). It contains raster information, which means that its resolution is determined by the size of its pixels. A JPG can display images consisting of millions of colors over 16 million, actually. As a result of its powerful compression capabilities, JPGs are good for displaying photos and images with complex color schemes. You can place a JPG in a Microsoft Word document and it may print to a laser-printer well, however, you should never use a JPG when professionally printing documents.

A GIF is another popular choice for the Internet. It is a bit-mapped graphics file format that supports a maximum of 256 colors, making it practical for almost all Internet graphics except photos. A GIF is the only option for animation online (unless you use Flash or other expensive vector-based Flash Animations formats). GIFs also support transparency, which means if you place a transparent GIF over something red, the background color of your GIF image will appear red.

Both JPGs and GIFs are meant to be displayed on screen but NEITHER is meant for professional printing. If you try to print using one, the image will most likely appear blurred or jagged (“bit-mapped”). Compared to EPSs, they are much smaller resolution files and cannot be enlarged without losing detail.

Digital Stock Photography: The RAW vs JPG Debate

If you use aDigital Stock Photography and that camera is an SLR, then it most likely can record images in RAW format. In general, you should record your images at the highest resolution possible. If you only have a small memory card and are worried that you can only record a few RAW images on it, then it’s time to buy a bigger card! [They don’t cost much these days]. You can always shrink an image after it’s taken but you can’t enlarge a small one without introducing artifacts. At the very least, you should have your camera record images in Hires JPG format but RAW format is even better.

Design TrainingAny kind of JPG written to your camera’s memory card will be processed in some way. JPGs, by their very nature, lose information in an image. If you repeatedly save a JPG, you’ll lose more and more detail in it and see more artifacts appearing. Also, if you’ve set your camera up to do some image manipulation (e.g. contast/brightness adjustments), these will also be applied before your camera writes the image out to the memory card. In such cases, you could end up with images that have burned out highlights or shadows that are so deep that they contain no detail. Such areas of an image may be irreparable even with the likes of Adobe PhotoShop.

RAW images, on the other hand, are simply that – raw. What the camera sees is dumped (without any image manipulation whatsoever) onto the memory card. RAW images also tend to contain more information and detail and have larger file sizes than similar resolution JPGs. The problem with RAW files is that they’ve not been the easiest to work with; for example, Windows Explorer cannot show RAW files as thumbnail images so, unless you’ve renamed your image files with meaningful names, you won’t know what the images are when you come back to them a couple of months later.

  • There are many types of cards you can choose from . Design the ones that you need or that sound the most interesting to you. Try birthday, anniversary, cards for children, wedding, sympathy, holiday or get well.

Using a bone folder is helpful here because it makes a very nice clean fold. There are several sizes to choose from, make sure you have an envelope to fit or be prepared to make one.   • Next choose a sticker or rubber stamp for the image on the front of the card. If using stamps, try different color stamp pads until you get the design and color you like. You can layer the stickers or stamped image on other paper to create a more pleasing design. Try using a combination of plain and matching patterned paper for this step.
  • There are embellishments you can use instead of a stamp or sticker. These are often dimensional and add a lot to the design of your card.
  • Make certain you have appropriate glue. Carefully consider the adhesive you want to use. A glue gun works well for heavy items but will wrinkle most papers. Glue dots and strips are handy for many design gluing jobs. I really like the glue stick that says”heavy duty” on the label, it is good for almost any paper and dries smooth and clear.
  • Design the words next. Think about what you want the card to say. Do you want the greeting or message on the inside or on the front of the card? You can use rubber stamps for this, stickers or computer generated greetings. There are so many fonts available that every card can be unique.
  • Lay your design out on the card before you attach the different elements. Check to make sure it all fits and that you like the design. Glue everything down and making sure all pieces are secure your Stock Photography.
  • Now look at the inside of your card. If you are going to put a message there think about layering it on other paper to match the design on the front of your card. Attach these pieces to the inside of the card.
  • Check out the whole card now. Are you happy with the design? Does it need anything extra like colored brads or buttons? Is there part of the design that would look nice colored in with marker, colored pencils, chalks or watercolors?
  • I believe a card is not finished until the fiber is added, both inside and out. Matching colors from the design, take two or three strands of coordinating ribbon, yarn, metallic thread or wire and tie into a knot. Trim the ends so it looks the way you want it. Attach with your glue gun and you are done with the card.The envelop please! To put a final touch on your design decorate the envelop to match the card. Use your markers, chalk, stickers and stamps to create an envelop that is as gorgeous as what’s inside!!
